Creamy burrata and bull tomato salad. This is a real treat and one of those dishes that I always choose when on the menu in a restaurant. The problem is that in the center of the UK, where I currently live, it’s very difficult to find burrata. When I saw a couple of pots in my local delicatessen, therefore, I snapped them up quickly and off to the grocers I went for bull tomatoes and fresh basil.
Look at this beauty…
Burrata & Bull Tomato Salad
1. Burrata or mozzarella?
The big question that I know some of you are asking is ” So Steve, what’s the big deal about burrata? Isn’t it the same as mozzarella?”.
Well, my fine food friends, the answer is an unquestionable “No!”. Fresh mozzarella cheese is a semi-soft Italian cheese made from either cow or water buffalo milk. Burrata cheese, on the other hand, takes the mozzarella to another level by forming a pouch with the mozzarella and then filling it with soft, stringy curd and cream. Yum!!
If you’ve never had burrata before then I ask you to trust me on this. Hunt some out and you will never look back. I promise.
Now, this burrata and tomato salad involves just a little slicing and then assembly. Very simple and takes no more than 5 minutes to make.
2. Gather all of the ingredients together
The first thing to do is to gather all of the ingredients together. The burrata and tomatoes of course. In addition, some fresh basil, extra virgin olive oil, and some good quality sea salt and ground black pepper.
Some people also add balsamic vinegar but it’s not to my taste. I would say, therefore, that this is optional.
3. Prepare the tomato
There is nothing complicated here. Just thinly slice the tomato from the top core down and display on your serving plate.
Lay out the tomato on the serbing plate
4. Assemble the burrata and bull tomato salad
With the tomato all laid out add the burrata to the center and sprinkle some fresh basil leaves all around.
Add the burrata to the tomato
Now, just break open the burrata and drizzle extra virgin olive oil all over. Finally, season with good quality sea salt and ground black pepper.
